The younger of my two daughters celebrates her 21st birthday today (September 11).

What a difference being an American kid overseas in the 60s was with being one now.

During this summer semester studying painting in Rome she found life easier as a "Canadian" than being a proud American. As a father I couldn't object in good conscience or for my fear of anti American-sentiment.

I grew up feeling proud and privileged on four continents as an American, and now feel fearful to bring my girls to visit Kenya.

I guess it isn't easy seeing your baby become an adult in today’s world.
